SERVING THE TEXAS PANHANDLE
The Texas Panhandle is comprised of the Northern most 26 counties in the State. Elevation drops from about 4,700 feet in the Northwest to about 2,000 feet in the Southeast. The change in elevation accounts for a variance in the growing season of about 39 days in an average year.
The Upper two-thirds of the area is separated from the lower one-third by the easily visible and scenic escarpment commonly known as the Caprock. The Caprock is well defined and easy to identify from the Goodnight area when looking to the Southwest. From a distance, the flat land appears to suddenly drop into the canyons. With offices in Clarendon and Claude, we are centrally located to serve the entire Panhandle.
Our immediate area is rich in interesting history. In modern times the Plains Indians pretty well had free use of the area until the early 1870s when the professional buffalo-hide hunters arrived. By the mid 1870s most of the Indian battles had been fought and the Indian control of the area was history. Charles Goodnight moved cattle to the Palo Duro Canyon in 1876, where in partnership with James Adair, he built the J A Ranch. Taking note of Goodnight's success, many other Pioneers moved to the area and established other large ranches.
Among the earliest towns to be established were Tascosa, Mobeetie and Clarendon. Many books have been written by Pioneers of this area and are very interesting reading for newcomers. Although much of the land continues to be operated as ranch land, some of the more productive land has gradually been converted to cultivated farm acres and with the development of irrigation, this area has become a prime producer of a wide range of crops. We now have the perfect environment for wild game and birds and the area is now well known as a hunter's paradise.
